These cruise ships moved into the bay during the pandemic when cruising stopped. During this period, they had to stay afloat in harbours, moving to new locations every few weeks. This bay was ideal as they could wait here for weeks free of charge, sending their crew to shore for food and supplies by small boats.
At its peak, there were 14 cruise ships in the bay, including P&O liners and various HMS vessels.
These photographs were shot at night to capture their glowing lights. Whilst striking, their presence was foreign and their large size felt invasive. They caused light pollution; smoke and haze over Weymouth; and their engines could be heard when you swam, encouraging dolphins into the bay where they became frequently spotted. Nevertheless, their presence was wonderous.
